Vanilla overnight oats with mixed berries

Vanilla overnight oats with mixed berries

Ahh, oatmeal again??? If you asked me a couple of years ago, oats were not part of my staple, especially when making into oatmeal. Previously oatmeal seemed bland, especially when I saw it produced with water and sugar. Nevertheless, fast-forward to now, and I have […]

Barley and lemon iced tea

A small change

A small change

Sustainability is s a value that I was growing fond of, yet at the same time, it seemed slightly overwhelming how to go about it. How can I make these changes? I have decided to break it down into small chunks making it more realistic to cultivate habits over time. The first change I wanted to focus on was not using plastic bags when purchasing fruit, veg, nuts and seeds. This can quickly turn into multiple-use plastic bags, and this was something that I wanted to change. First off, I thought of the brown paper lunch bags. However, that would not last long, and we could not pack giant vegetables.

I came across these 7 reusable, washable bags made from cotton for $10. It comes in 7 different sizes helped carry fruit and veggies in various sizes (I even use it for green leafy veggies). There were no issues with any items coming from their bags, and that was a tick off my list and purchased three more sets. Interestingly, this generated some interest from some other shoppers. (Now thinking of how to apply this when going to the deli).

Slight changes may seem insignificant, but over time yields tremendous impacts that are worth acknowledging. My approach to things is to not be preachy and shove information at people. Communication that helps people reduce the use of plastic, resulting in a conviction and desire to change, is a better approach than condemning, shaming others for not implementing a system. Many people are stressed and trying to get by, especially with the pandemic. Therefore, it may not be on their priority list, or they may not have figured out a system that works for them. The convivence of plastic just next to items just makes it more accessible. One thing less to think about. (alight back to my point). I believe when something is working, that makes people curious. It is a beautiful opportunity to share what is working for the encounter of the shopkeeper reminded me of. These experiences provide opportunities to connect with the community and educate effectively and respectfully.

Never underestimate the power of tiny changes, for they will eventually be gems of knowledge that can enrich not only your life but the life of others.

Eating at the table

Something new

Something new

When December and January comes, it is usually a time people where people reflect over the year, and how fast did 2021 end? It’s hard to even imagine that it has been two years that we have been facing this pandemic. The unpredictability of this pandemic, the snap lockdowns, homeschooling children with additional responsibilities on parents, working overtime, the stress and pressures of daily life. It all just seems like a to juggle on one’s plates as each person tries to do their best to navigate these unchartered waters and challenging times. To be honest, it can be exhausting, and you feel like doing nothing because the body is empty and just coping with the basic routines. We must recognise and acknowledge as there have been things beyond our control constantly. The pandemic has affected each person differently. This is why it is imperative to remind ourselves, which can be complicated and takes being intentional to not compare ourselves or judge others. This can be hard for many reasons, such as when we are exposed to social media, how does it make us feel? Do we feel? (something to think about, which is not always the easiest thing to do. This is especially the case as this involves examining our hearts and self-reflection (alright, back to my point). Each person is unique. They have been raised up with different life experiences and values. So I wanted to express how I admire the resiliency in others. It is hard to describe this feeling, and I don’t take it for granted.

Challenges and hardships are not comfortable. Sometimes, we may not understand why certain events happen and get stuck in a vicious cycle where we question things that we may never answer. This is easier said than done. I am starting to see things in a new light and understand what I have control of. More importantly, this time had shown me to define what is important to me. Time is precious, and you only get one chance to live, which is why I want to be more intentional with my time and what I spend it with and who I spend it with. Some things are bubbling inside me that is waiting to be unleashed, and I will no longer give fear the permission to restrict the new journey I will embark on.

Turkish bread with baby spinach, tomatoes, feta, lemon and sumac

Turkish bread with baby spinach, tomatoes, feta, lemon and sumac

Friday morning gradually emerged as the shades of golden, red, and brown leaves gracefully pirouetted to the light wind’s frigid autumn melody. Slowly walking across the lake with its own charm and beauty. The murky yet picturesque waterfall was gushing over each of the three platforms. The water flowed smoothly as syrup and was comforting to observe. The birds forming their own harmonious tune, and the smell of freshly cut mowed grass added to the lake’s vivid scenery. Time spent walking along the lake was a reminder of the power of immersing myself in nature and how it keeps me grounded from a busy and hectic life. It didn’t matter the tasks that demanded my attention. What mattered was that I embraced the moment here and now, welcoming peace for today.

This recipe is simple and humble yet packs a lot of flavour, freshness. The star ingredient is sumac which typically linked to the tartness of lemons. This paired well with the freshly squeezed lemon. You get the creaminess and saltiness from the feta, fresh greens from the spinach and olive oil to top it off. I can see this dish appearing in my staple for lunch, brunch.
